NFL Alumni Youth of America Programs give the Alumni an opportunity to put their commitment to "Caring for Kids" into action. This is accomplished through both the NFL Alumni's Youth Scholarship Grants and Youth of America Week.
NFL Alumni Youth Scholarship Grants are given to outstanding high school scholar-athletes who would otherwise be unable to continue their education. Each grant is funded by corporate support, and is given in memory of some of the game's most legendary figures. Thus far, two $5,000 grants have been given in memory of pro football legends Red Grange and Jack Christiansen. The students will be selected by the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Although the Alumni and local chapters conduct charitable and educational programs year-round, the highlight is Youth of America Week, which culminates in seven days of concentrated youth work during the first week of the NFL season.
During Youth of America Week, Alumni members and supporters gather to reach out to the nation through youth sports and service activities of all kinds according to local needs. The underlying purpose of these and other Alumni activities is to present successful former professional athletes as role models for today's youth.
Activities range from visits to children's homes and hospitals to appearances at schools and juvenile detention facilities, hosting youth sports festivals, taking groups of inner-city kids to home-team games, hosting picnics and outings and holding Alumni Youth Football Clinics and seminars for coaches and parents.
After a modest beginning in 1982, the Youth of America concept spread to each NFL city and beyond to wherever former professionals gather. Youth of America Week was proclaimed a national observance by President Reagan in 1983, received the blessings of Pope John Paul II in 1985, and shows promise of expanding into other sports.
